Introduction

The purpose of this report is to evaluate two public cloud content management systems (CMS) as software solutions. This report will compare the two chosen content management systems, namely WordPress and Wix. The comparison will be made based on their functionality, their support for different business models, their available business process modelling tools, their available visual site management tools and reporting, its performance and stability, the connectivity to existing business systems, their compliance with standards, its global and multicultural capability, their ease of navigation, their safety and security, and the learning curve of each CMS. The methodology used in this report is qualitative data collection uses secondary research. The findings of this report are based on credible reviews found on each website and primary experience of utilising each CMS to create a personal website. This report concludes with the choice of CMS depending on requirements and abilities. Wix is great for beginners with easy drag-and-drop and templates. Wix is less flexible than WordPress. Both support biz models. Wix for startups, WordPress for enterprises. Goals impact software choice. WP is a flexible open-source modeler with plugins. Wix is inadequate for complex businesses. Wix simplifies site management with drag-and-drop editor. The report also found that Wix aided website reporting and SEO. Wix manages Google sitemap. WordPress has Google analytics plugins but requires manual configuration. WP succeeded Wix in traffic management. WordPress is known for its adaptable plugins for diverse business needs. Wix attracts startups with simple integration, vast features, and minimal initial connectivity. Wix optimizes mobile SEO. WP users get easier PCI DSS compliance with WC. WordPress suits multilingual sites. Wix is rapid and bilingual. Wix software is secure. WP is more secure than Wix, but more difficult to use. Wix was best suited for simple software, while WP was suited who users who required more tech solutions.

Methodology

The aim of this study was to compare WordPress and Wix and evaluate the two CMS products as a software solution. To accomplish this, a systematic review of qualitative secondary sources was conducted.

Data Collection:

The data for this study were collected from academic databases, including Semantic Scholar and ResearchGate. The search was conducted using the keywords "Wix," "WordPress," "review," and "comparison," and included articles published between 2016 and 2023. The research method used relied largely on the qualitative model and the method of analysing secondary sources was used. The documents sought were articles, papers, theses, forums on websites and articles on the website pertaining to the topic, which were included without any interference by the researcher.

Data Analysis:

After the initial search, documents were reviewed for relevance based on the title and abstract. The documents were then reviewed and examined for eligibility. The inclusion criteria for this study were that the secondary documents: (1) compared WordPress and Wix as software solutions, (2) provided qualitative data, and (3) reported findings related to the platforms' functionality, their support for different business models, their available business process modelling tools, their available visual site management tools and reporting, its performance and stability, the connectivity to existing business systems, their compliance with standards, its global and multicultural capability, their ease of navigation, their safety and security, and the learning curve of each CMS. The researcher then looked at articles that fit the specified criteria and analysed them by sorting the information into categories based on the research questions. The categories were joined to find the main ideas which summarises the results of the of the report.

Limitations:

One prevalent limitation of this study is that students were restricted to two public cloud CMS products. Another limitation of this study is that only articles published in English were included, potentially excluding relevant studies in other languages. Students could only evaluate the free and basic plans of both CMS products, which meant that they could not evaluate and compare all the features of the two platforms first hand. Lastly, as with any systematic review, there is always a chance that papers with flawed or contradictory findings may not have been published.

Findings

It is important to note that when evaluating the two CMS platforms, it will depend largely on the user’s specific needs, goals, technical skills, and budget. In terms of its functionality, the creators of plugins and themes can benefit from many of the fundamental WordPress features. The WordPress platform is highly flexible and customizable, and scalable. The WordPress website is relatively easy to use, compared to hand-coding a website from scratch. Finally, the WordPress plugins are add-ons that expand a WordPress’s functionality. Wix also offers a selection of tools called plug-ins, apps, and add-ons to improve your website with additional features and functionality.

In terms of their support for different business models, it was found that both offer a variety of features and functionality to accommodate various business models. However, Wix might be a better option for smaller enterprises or individuals with little to no technical expertise, whereas WordPress is typically thought to be more powerful and adaptable, especially for e-commerce and enterprise-level websites.

While evaluating their available business process modelling tools. It was discovered that both WordPress and Wix provide certain tools for business process modelling, but WordPress is a more versatile and configurable choice due to its open-source nature and big plugin library. On the other side, Wix is a platform with less flexibility and third-party connectivity options, which makes it less suitable for demands involving complicated business process modelling.

Both platforms include reporting features, but Wix offers a single dashboard to manage your business, while WordPress relies on plugins for that.

WordPress offers more control and adaptability over website performance and stability, but it requires more specialized information to preserve. Wix is simpler to set up and oversee, but it has fewer optimization choices and relies on Wix's framework for performance and stability.

The open-source nature of WordPress makes it a more adaptable and extensible platform when integrating with existing business systems. However, joining WordPress with other frameworks may require more technical expertise. Wix's more restricted integration alternatives may be adequate for a few businesses, especially those that are in the startup phases and do not require advanced integration options.

WordPress and Wix have different levels of support for different compliance standards. WordPress is known for its high level of compliance with web guidelines and its adaptability, which permits engineers to customize their destinations to meet compliance standards. Wix also supports web benchmarks and has built-in tools for SEO and mobile responsiveness, but its customization options are more limited, which can make it difficult to navigate adherence to certain standards.

In terms of global and multicultural capabilities, WordPress is a more adaptable platform that can be customized to suit the requirements of any site, including multilingual sites. It encompasses a larger community of engineers who make plugins and themes that can be used to include functionality and design to a website. On the other hand, Wix is a more user-friendly platform designed to help users create professional-looking websites quickly and easily. It has built-in multilingual functionality and a global CDN that guarantees fast loading times for clients around the world.

Wix is a hosted platform, so users don`t have to worry about installing their own security measures. As a result, WordPress sites are more susceptible to security breaches and users must install security plugins and take other steps to protect their sites.

WordPress is considered to have a more extreme learning curve compared to Wix. WordPress could be a more complex stage that requires a few specialized information, such as understanding HTML1 , CSS2 , and PHP3 . Wix utilizes a drag-and-drop interface that produces it into a simple to form an online site without requiring to compose any code.

Discussion

The data suggests that Wix is a CMS website builder that uses drag-and-drop instruments and pre-designed templates to make it simpler for anybody to make a professional-looking website without any prior coding knowledge (Haan, 2023). (Haan, 2023). In contrast Astra (2023) indicates that, WordPress is a CMS that allows users to create, manage, and publish content on their website. Furthermore, it is clear from the secondary sources and first-hand experience that WordPress does not have a drag-and-drop editor as part of its core functionality. It has been suggested by Renouard (2023), that WordPress has more free themes and plugins than Wix, making it easier for users to customize. In comparison, Wix is more suitable for beginners who have no coding knowledge and want to build websites quickly and easily (Wix Vs WordPress | Compare and Choose the Best Platform | Wix.com, n.d.). This analysis is supported by the findings of Haan (2023).

The research indicates that Wix may be a better choice for very small businesses (in startup or introductory phases) or people with limited technical knowledge, as it offers a simpler, more user-friendly interface (Haan, 2023a). In line with the hypothesis, Haan (2023) also states that both platforms offer e-commerce features, but WordPress is generally considered more capable and adaptable. This is supported by the WooCommerce plugin (offered by WordPress), a highly customizable and widely used e-commerce platform. WordPress is most popular platform for blogging for blogging, with a wide variety of features and customization choices specifically designed for bloggers. Whereas Wix does offer blogging features, it is less vigorous than WordPress and may not be leading choice for legitimate bloggers (Haan, 2023). Through first-hand experience, creating a personal website or e-portfolio on WordPress require more technical knowledge to create and customize, and it was more difficult to navigate through. While Wix offered a range of customizable templates specifically designed for personal websites, which made it easy for me to choose from and edit the template to my liking. Wix for me was the more suitable and easier choice for a creative that has limited coding and technical knowledge and did not require a detailed and complex website. The results confirm the claims of Haan (2023) that states while both platforms can be utilized by bigger companies, WordPress is largely considered more scalable and adaptable for enterprise-level websites. The evidence clearly shows that WordPress offers several plugins and customization choices designed specifically for expansive and complex websites, while Wix may not be as well suited for this level of business (WordPress Plugins, n.d.).

WordPress and Wix are both website building platforms, and while they provide several tools that can be useful for business process modelling, they are not explicitly designed for this reason. WordPress is an open-source platform that provides a great extent of customization through an expansive library of plugins and themes. This implies that companies can introduce an assortment of plugins as an instrument for “business process modelling”, such as plugins for making visual aids or diagrams. Some popular plugins for process modelling on WordPress include "Draw Attention", "LucidChart", and "Visual Composer".

In comparison, Wix is a closed platform that gives more restricted customization options. However, there is a drag-and-drop editor that allows you to create simple visual aids. Furthermore, Wix has no built-in marketplace for third-party apps and plugins available. This implies that users are forced to use the tools accessible on the website.

The most evident difference between the two platforms with regards to its visual website management tools is the editors. Wix enables users to move any item or section to any other place on your website page and users can drag any object to another position on their page (Wix Vs WordPress | Compare and Choose the Best Platform | Wix.com, n.d.). The results by Haan (2023) contradict these claims, in comparing it to WordPress that through its open-source platform can provide more control and adaptability. This shows us that WordPress users have a more detailed control over the layout and design of their websites.

In terms of reporting, Wix provides a variety of reporting features, such as website analytics which help users gain an accurate understanding into website traffic, viewer behaviour, and so forth. Wix also offers a tool called "Ascend" that enables users to run their business from a single dashboard, which incorporates chatbots, email marketing, and contact management (Wix Vs WordPress | Compare and Choose the Best Platform | Wix.com, n.d.). The source also tells us that Wix has built-in SEO tools that enable users optimize and manage websites independently and facilitate better ranking on search engines. The reporting features of WordPress require requires more technical knowledge to use. The data suggests that users can emplace plugins such as "Google Analytics Dashboard" to follow website traffic and viewer behaviour, and there are various plugins accessible for administering and analysing client data, email marketing campaigns, and so forth.

The results indicate that WordPress is a self-hosted website. The source clearly indicates that clients are in charge of selecting their own hosting supplier and keeping up their site's performance and stability. It is clear from this that users must take the initiative when it comes to preserving their websites. The data suggests that can handle high levels of traffic without slowing down or crashing. Contrary to the hypothesized association, Wix is a fully hosted platform. This shows us that Wix oversees the site's hosting and maintenance. The results indicate that users do not need to stay up to date with technical requirements such as software updates, server performance, or security issues. This, however, demonstrates that users rely on Wix’s infrastructure and have less control over the site's performance and stability.

While comparing performance factors specifically, WordPress has ability to handle high levels of traffic and can be optimized for speed. In contrast, Wix websites are usually slower than WordPress websites, as they have restricted optimization selections. This is demonstrated by the techniques employed by WordPress websites to enhance speed and performance consists of caching plugins, content delivery networks, and other improvement methods. The data suggests that WordPress may be the more reliable and stable platform. This is demonstrated by large community of designers who continuously work to improve the platform's stability and security. In line with the hypothesis, Wix is stable as well, but it may experience sporadic downtime or performance issues owed to its fully hosted nature (Renouard, 2023).

The data suggests that WordPress provides a more extensive selection of integration options with existing business systems, including customer relationship management (CRM) systems, email marketing tools, e-commerce platforms, and so forth. Conversely, businesses that require more advanced integration options need to find alternatives to Wix or find other loopholes to connect with other business systems. The results indicate that WordPress has access to selected built-in integrations with popular tools such as Google Analytics, Mailchimp, and Facebook. In contrast to this, Wix's integration choices are more limited than that of WordPress. All this evidence demonstrates that WordPress's open-source environment allows for more flexibility and making it the more extendable platform regarding integrating with existing business systems. Enterprises that require more advanced integration options would opt for WordPress as a software solution, provided they possess some technical expertise to assess which plugins will work effortlessly together (WordPress Plugins, n.d.). The evidence clearly shows that businesses in the startup or introductory phases might choose Wix as a software solution as their limited integration selections are sufficient since they do not need complex integrations and their level of connectivity to existing business systems are low during these phases (Haan, 2023).

The data suggests that WordPress high level of compliance with web standards. The evidence clearly shows this through their dedication to performing in accordance with the GDPR (Your WordPress.com Site and the GDPR, 2023). This is further supported by their compliance with HTML, CSS, and accessibility standards such as WCAG . The results indicate that Wix also complies with web standards such as HTML and CSS, and it has built-in tools for optimizing sites for search engine optimization (SEO) and mobile responsiveness (Security of Wix’s Billing Services and PCI Compliance | Help Center | Wix.com, n.d.). It is clear from the data that Wix has fewer customization options (compared to WordPress) which indicates that it will be more challenging to ensure compliance with certain standards using Wix as a software solution. This is evident by, Wix's limited accessibility features, which may make it more difficult for users to verify that their site meets WCAG accessibility guidelines. From first-hand experience, while creating websites on both platforms, both offer built-in e-commerce functionality and support for payment gateways such as PayPal and Stripe. The results indicate that WooCommerce , is famous its flexibility and customization options, making it easier for users to meet specific compliance requirements such as PCI DSS .

The data suggests that WordPress has the biggest CMS market share, and it has an estimate of 34,896,678 live WordPress websites (Balkhi, 2023). The source also tells us that WordPress supports multiple languages and has a built-in translation system that allows users to create multilingual websites (Balkhi, 2023). Balkhi (2023) goes on to indicate that Wix holds 10% market share of the global CMS market. When evaluating the top 1 million sites, 28.7% use WordPress and only 0.56% use Wix (Balkhi, 2023). The results suggests that Wix has a built-in multilingual feature enabling users to create websites in multiple languages. This is supported by their global CDN8 that ensures fast loading times for users around the world.

Regarding safety and security, Wix users are more protected as users can't edit its core software (M & J, 2023). The data suggests that WordPress websites are more vulnerable to security breaches, since users are responsible for installing security plugins and taking other measures to protect their websites (Renouard, 2023). The sources further indicates that Wix’s source code is not publicly accessible given its closed-source nature. It is clear from this that Wix websites will be more difficult to hack. These results build on existing evidence of both CMS platforms providing SSL certificates and other security features to protect user data (Security of Wix’s Billing Services and PCI Compliance | Help Center | Wix.com, n.d.). Therefore, it is evident that Wix may be the suitable option for users unfamiliar with website security measures or do not have the resources or time to maintain their own website security measures.

The primary data suggests that WordPress has a steeper learning curve compared to Wix (Haan, 2023). WordPress is a more complex platform that requires a minimal technical knowledge and understanding. The results indicate that Wix is more user-friendly, especially for beginners in the CMS platform field. This clear by the fact that I was able to build and finish my Wix personal website in the same day and my WordPress website took me a few days. It was simple to employ the drag-and-drop interface and create a personal website or e-portfolio by choosing one of its pre-designed templates. It required no prior knowledge of coding or any technical expertise or understanding to create the website and publish it.

                                                                                          Conclusion
After conducting an extensive comparison between Wix and WordPress, it is clear the choice between the two platforms will vary according to the user's needs and technical capabilities. Wix is more appropriate for beginners to utilise their drag-and-drop tools and pre-designed templates. However, Wix is less user-friendly and customisable than WordPress due to the lack of free themes and plugins accessible. A variety of features and functionality are available on both platforms to support various business models. However, the data suggests that Wix is better for businesses in their startup or introductory phases, while WordPress is more tailored for larger companies requiring enterprise-level websites. The specific requirements and objectives of the company will be the deciding factor when choosing a software solution. When evaluating the available business process modelling tools, WordPress is more versatile and customizable owing to its open-source status and extensive plugin library. Wix has offers limited customization options and third-party integrations, which makes it less applicable for those requiring complex business process modelling. The visual site management tools, such as Wix's drag-and-drop editor make moving any element to any location on any page possible. In this regard, WordPress, offers more adaptability and control thanks to its open-source platform, which enables highly detailed control over a website's design and format. In terms of reporting, with the help of Wix's integrated SEO tools, you can manage and optimize your website on your own. Wix provides sitemap creation and maintenance as well as indexing your website so that it appears on Google. WordPress has a selection of plugins available for reporting and analytics, for instance Google Analytics, but you must install and set up these programs manually. WordPress is known for its ability to handle high traffic and optimization features (i.e., using caching plugins, content delivery networks, etc.), while Wix sites are normally slower because of its fewer optimization choices and reliance on Wix's infrastructure. WordPress has a high level of reliability and stability due to its large group of engineers continuously improving the platform's stability and security. Whereas Wix may encounter occasional downtime or performance issues due to its fully hosted nature. Enterprises that require more advanced integration options would opt for WordPress as a software solution because of their flexible and extensible plugins when it comes to integrating with existing business systems. Businesses in the startup or introductory phases might choose Wix as their limited integration selections are sufficient and their level of connectivity to existing business systems is low during these phases. Furthermore, Wix adheres to web standards like HTML and CSS and includes tools for building sites that are mobile-friendly and SEO-optimized. WooCommerce, the e-commerce plugin for WordPress, makes it straightforward for users to adhere to strict compliance standards like PCI DSS. WordPress is a more flexible platform that can be customized to suit the needs of any website, including multilingual websites. Wix is a user-friendly platform designed with built-in multilingual feature and a global CDN that ensures fast loading times for users anywhere the world. In terms of security and safety, Wix is a fully hosted platform with fewer vulnerabilities as security measures are built-in and its core software cannot be altered. WordPress sites are more vulnerable to security breaches because the onus is on users to install security plugins and take other measures to protect their websites. It has been found that WordPress has a steeper learning curve than Wix. Ultimately, if users with limited minimal technical knowledge, searching for a simpler software solution, Wix is the better option. However, users willing to invest more time, broaden their knowledge of more powerful CMS and possess more technical expertise, WordPress is the one to choose.
